fix(ui-voice): start large model pack files first and show verification progress - #608
Conversation
…on progress Kokoro's native pack lists model.onnx (114 MB) and voices.bin (54 MB) last among 362 files, so they downloaded nearly alone after the small files, then sat at "100% · 360 of 362 files" while being SHA-256 checked in JS with no visible progress. - Schedule pack files largest-first so the big transfers overlap the small ones and their verification overlaps remaining downloads. - Report verified bytes from the chunked hash and show a "Verifying" phase with its own bar once every byte has arrived. - Animate transfer progress bars linearly over a few native progress reports instead of a decelerating curve restarted on every report. WalkthroughThe model-pack installer now reports verified bytes separately from transferred bytes. The settings UI displays verification progress with file counts and localized accessibility labels. The progress parser includes a nullable verified-byte field, and the meter animation uses a slower linear transition. ChangesModel-pack verification progress

A resumed install hashes files left on disk before counting them, so a kept 114 MB model.onnx froze the bar until its whole check finished. Checking a kept file now advances the transfer as it is hashed, and a kept file that fails verification withdraws its bytes before it is downloaded again. Forward the shared installer progress object through Kokoro preparation and withdraw rejected existing bytes before downloading their replacement. Keep healthy retry progress monotonic at the shared installer owner. Add regressions through the real native preparation and shared installer paths, cover verification parsing, and describe the development verification phase. The rejected-byte correction preserves the behavior introduced in PR happier-dev#608. Co-authored-by: danljungstrom <danljungstrom@users.noreply.github.com>

Reviewed current head 1b63c51. I recommend the source change; no additional 0.2 code correction was needed. The behavior belongs at the native manifest downloader: it schedules larger files first and distinguishes transferred bytes from checked bytes. Both initial install and update use this owner. The shared transfer row presents that progress for TTS and STT; it does not become another installer/accounting authority. The rejected-scratch accounting and phase-specific meter key already address the earlier CodeRabbit/Greptile findings. I found no remaining competing owner in the affected native corridor; the web backend does not use this native installer. Validation: UI typecheck passed. Four regressions failed against the prior implementation as intended. The broad affected run passed 174 files/963 tests with seven setup failures caused by a missing generated protocol file; after running its canonical generator, all 77 tests in the affected rerun passed. Current-head check-runs have no failures. Native device QA was unavailable, so physical-device hashing/motion remains unverified. The existing 0.3 port #620 needed adaptation through its evolved shared installer rather than copying the 0.2 downloader. I pushed two follow-up commits there: 92c77f5 preserves full native preparation progress and removes rejected-byte contributions; 38f3233 restarts verification when Range is ignored while retaining completed native transfer progress, and improves Spanish wording. The matching 0.3 shared package passes all 165 tests and typecheck. The whole intent and corrections are also represented in the local 0.3 line. Current-head review/CI confirmation for #620 remains separate and pending. Thanks @danljungstrom for the source change and port. Posted on behalf of @leeroybrun. |
Port of #608 to v0.3 through the shared installer core. The Kokoro manifest lists its two large files last, so with 6 transfer slots they downloaded almost alone after the small files, then sat at 100% while the core re-read and hashed them with no progress shown. - installModelPackWithHost schedules files largest-first. - ModelPackCoreProgress reports verified bytes, including kept bytes rehashed on a range resume. - The model row shows a Verifying phase with verified bytes and files once every byte has arrived, with strings in every locale. - MeterBar glides linearly over durationMs.slow so throttled transfer reports blend into continuous motion; the bar is keyed by phase so it does not glide backward between phases. Thank you very much @danljungstrom ! :) |
Problem
On Android, the Kokoro model download bar felt jerky, paused, jumped to 100%, and then sat at "178 MB of 178 MB · 360 of 362 files" without finishing.
The published
kokoro-82m-v1.0-onnx-q8-wasmmanifest lists its two large files last:model.onnx(114 MB) is file 359 andvoices.bin(54 MB) is file 361. With 6 download slots, the 360 small files went first. The two big files then downloaded almost alone, and the installer checked their SHA-256 in JS with no progress shown. The UI stayed at 100% for the whole check.Changes
downloadManifestFilessorts pack files by size before handing them to the download slots. The big transfers start straight away while the other slots work through the small files, and checking finished files overlaps with the downloads still running. This applies to both Kokoro TTS and Sherpa STT packs, and to updates.ModelPackDownloadProgressgainsverified, the bytes already checked, reported after each 1 MB chunk. Once every byte has arrived but files are still being checked, the model row shows Verifying, a bar for the checked bytes, and "Verified X of Y · n of m files". It also has its own accessibility label. New strings are added to all locales.MIN_EVENT_DT_MS = 100).MeterBar's transfer animation restarted a 140 ms decelerating curve on every report, so it lurched and stalled. It now glides linearly over 320 ms, which blends consecutive reports into one continuous motion. The fp32 pack staying hidden on native is unchanged and intentional. No native fp32 pack is published; its manifest URL returns 404.
